Strategic Value: Empowering youth to make healthier choices

The Lake Placid/ Wilmington CYC Coalition is an organization comprised of volunteer members of the community with a vision to connect youth and community through advocacy, education and engagement to foster youth to be educationally and vocationally productive, civically and socially connected and physically and mentally healthy. The mission of CYC is to reduce substance abuse, including alcohol, marijuana and other drugs by area youth. Their goal is to promote an environment in the communities of Lake Placid and Wilmington that develops the power and conviction to make healthy choices by encouraging a "no use" community norm for the local youth.

The coordinator of CYC approached Cloudsplitter for a grant to support the annual Youth Leadership Program. A group of local youth benefit from the National Youth Leadership Institute at CADCA (Community of Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) Conference. A positive and supportive community empowers young people to be successful.

Grant Analysis:

Cloudsplitter’s financial support allowed a group of local high school students to travel to the National Leadership Conference. The interactions, curricula and goals successfully fulfilled their needs. These young people are now spreading the skills they learned to the middle and elementary school students at their own developmental level. The goal is to introduce them to the concept of strategic prevention framework at an early level so that they will grow up with the tools, skills and empowerment to effect necessary community change.
